Convoy (1978)

Convoy is pure American road-movie electricity: a big, dusty, CB-radio-fueled fable where engines roar, jokes fly, and the open highway feels like both playground and battleground. Sam Peckinpah brings an unexpectedly lyrical eye to all that chrome and motion, turning trucks, sunsets, and long stretches of asphalt into something almost mythic, while Kris Kristofferson’s Rubber Duck has the easy charisma of a folk hero you can’t help but follow. The banter is lived-in and funny, the cast clicks, and the whole thing rolls along with a rebellious, good-time swagger even when the heat closes in. It’s not for viewers craving a tightly engineered plot, but if you want a breezy, crowd-pleasing ride with personality, scenery, and a surprisingly poetic sense of momentum, this one delivers.

The problem is it often feels like a string of loosely connected set pieces: the tone lurches between comedy, action, and drama, and the script is so predictable and thin that the “movement” never gains much weight. If you’re expecting peak Peckinpah intensity or a sharply written satire, this can come off sluggish and self-indulgent, like a long drive with no real destination. But if you’re in the mood for dusty Americana, trucker camaraderie, and a few fun CB-fueled moments carried by Kris Kristofferson’s laid-back charisma, it can still be an easy, low-stakes watch.
