Cindy (1978)

Cindy feels special because it takes a story you think you know by heart and lets it sing in a new key: an all-Black Cinderella set in wartime Harlem, where glamour is hard-won and hope has to be invented from scratch. The movie’s charm comes from its warm, TV-musical glow—street-corner magic, ballroom wish-fulfillment, and a neighborhood that feels lived-in—anchored by Charlayne Woodard’s openhearted performance as a young woman trying to keep her dignity intact. It’s romantic without being syrupy, and the “magic” has a scrappy, community-made quality that turns the fairy tale into something lovingly human. If you’re not in the mood for a made-for-TV rhythm and a gentler, old-school pace, it may not hit, but if you are, it’s an inviting, spirited reimagining with real soul.

Cindy is clearly aiming to reframe Cinderella through a Black Harlem lens, mixing romance, music, and a postwar atmosphere with real affection for its setting and cast. But it’s very much a made-for-TV product of its era: the pacing is gentle, the drama is broad, and the “magic” leans more cute and stagey than genuinely enchanting. If you need sharp writing, big musical numbers, or a modern, hard-hitting take on its themes, this will likely feel quaint and a bit thin. If, however, you’re in the mood for a warm, culturally specific reinterpretation with Charlayne Woodard’s likable presence doing a lot of the heavy lifting, it can still be an easy, pleasant watch.
