The Cheap Detective (1978)
A spoof of the entire 1940s detective genre. San Francisco private detective, Lou Pekinpaugh is accused of murdering his partner at the instigation of his mistress—his partner's wife.
What people think about The Cheap Detective
What makes The Cheap Detective such a delight is how lovingly it skewers the hardboiled 1940s gumshoe world while still feeling like a real, shadowy mystery you can sink into. Peter Falk shuffles through the noir fog with that Columbo-esque mix of rumpled charm and sly timing, and the film keeps tossing him into one deadpan, absurdly staged twist after another without ever turning mean-spirited. The vibe is pure old-movie pastiche—snappy banter, glamorous trouble, and a parade of eccentrics—played just straight enough that the jokes land like perfectly timed punches. If you don’t have much patience for spoofs or you’ve never warmed to classic noir, it may feel like an inside joke, but for anyone even slightly tempted by the genre, it’s an easy, entertaining watch with a reliably high hit-to-miss ratio.
The Cheap Detective is aiming to be a loving parody of classic 1940s noir, basically smashing Casablanca and The Maltese Falcon together and letting Peter Falk shuffle through the wreckage with that familiar, rumpled charm. The problem is the movie leans so hard on borrowed scenes and references that the comedy can feel more like recognition than wit, and when it does reach for original jokes they’re hit-and-miss and sometimes a bit forced. If you want a sharp, consistently funny spoof with its own identity, this may feel thin and oddly sluggish despite the murders and “treasure” plot. But if you’re a noir fan who enjoys cozy, low-stakes silliness and likes watching a good cast play dress-up in a genre sandbox, it can still be a mildly pleasant time.
