The Cheap Detective (1978)

Peter Falk shuffles through the noir fog with that Columbo-esque mix of rumpled charm and sly timing, and the film keeps tossing him into one deadpan, absurdly staged twist after another without ever turning mean-spirited. The vibe is pure old-movie pastiche—snappy banter, glamorous trouble, and a parade of eccentrics—played just straight enough that the jokes land like perfectly timed punches. If you don’t have much patience for spoofs or you’ve never warmed to classic noir, it may feel like an inside joke, but for anyone even slightly tempted by the genre, it’s an easy, entertaining watch with a reliably high hit-to-miss ratio.
