Capricorn One (1977)

Capricorn One has that deliciously unnerving “what if the lie is bigger than the mission?” hook, and it turns it into a lean, propulsive paranoia thriller that still feels timely in an era of manufactured narratives. Peter Hyams keeps the tension tight and tactile—desert heat, humming machinery, and sudden bursts of action—while the story toggles between claustrophobic coercion and wide-open manhunt suspense. Elliott Gould is the perfect guide through the madness: funny, stubborn, and just cynical enough to make the danger feel real, and James Brolin gives the astronauts’ predicament a grounded, human edge. It does ask you to go with its high-concept premise and a few big leaps, but if you like conspiracies that escalate with every new “accident,” this is the kind of movie that grabs hold and doesn’t let go.

Capricorn One is aiming for a paranoid, “what if the system lied to you?” thriller that taps into space-race anxiety and media manipulation, and the premise is still deliciously provocative. The problem is it often asks you to swallow a lot of convenient coincidences and fuzzy logic, so if you’re the type who needs airtight plotting, you’ll spend more time arguing with the movie than enjoying it. The pacing can feel bloated, with stretches that play less like mounting tension and more like the film circling the runway. That said, there’s solid late-’70s grit, a few genuinely tense set pieces, and a committed cast—just don’t go in expecting a sleek, tightly written conspiracy masterpiece.
