French Fried Vacation (1978)

French Fried Vacation is a sunburnt, freewheeling snapshot of desire and distraction—less a tidy plot machine than a hilariously observed week where grown adults try, and mostly fail, to reinvent themselves between volleyball games and midnight flirtations. Patrice Leconte captures the Club Med bubble with a sharp eye for social awkwardness and a generous affection for human foolishness, letting Thierry Lhermitte, Christian Clavier, and Gérard Jugnot play insecurity and bravado like perfectly mismatched dance partners. The vibe is breezy, bawdy, and very 1970s, with jokes that come from petty rivalries, romantic misfires, and the strange rules of a resort that turns life into one long organized “fun” event. It’s not for anyone allergic to raunchy humor, casual nudity, or characters behaving badly, but if you want a classic French comedy that laughs at vacation fantasies while still understanding why we chase them, this one delivers.

French Fried Vacation is trying to bottle that anything-goes, sunburnt Club Med vibe—awkward games, casual hookups, and a loose ensemble of comic archetypes bouncing off each other. The problem is it’s more a string of sketches than a story, and a lot of the humor leans on dated sexual politics and broad caricature, so if you don’t click with 1970s French farce it can feel repetitive fast. There’s also some nudity, plenty of coarse language, and a sudden serious turn that may catch you off guard in what’s mostly played for laughs. If you’re in the mood for lightweight, nostalgic ensemble silliness with a few genuinely funny moments and you can forgive the era’s rough edges, it’ll do the job; if you want sharper comedy or characters you can root for, you’ll likely be irritated rather than entertained.
