The White Buffalo (1977)

The White Buffalo is the kind of offbeat, myth-tinged western that feels like a campfire legend told by someone who’s lived too long and seen too much—part adventure yarn, part haunted character study. Charles Bronson plays Wild Bill Hickok not as a swaggering icon but as a worn, sleep-starved man pursued by a dream he can’t outrun, and the film leans into that melancholy with eerie conviction. J. Lee Thompson stages the journey through wonderfully grimy saloons, brutal frontier outposts, and stark high country vistas, all under a moody score that makes the whole hunt feel fated rather than merely exciting. It’s not a straight, realistic horse opera—the premise is proudly strange and a little pulpy—but if you’re in the mood for a western with atmosphere, mythic bite, and a surprisingly reflective soul, it’s an easy one to recommend.

The White Buffalo is clearly trying to mash up a mythic, Moby Dick-style obsession tale with a gritty frontier Western, and on paper that’s a cracking idea for Bronson to brood his way through. In practice, the film’s biggest problem is that the central menace often looks and moves like a mechanical prop, which drains tension from scenes that are meant to feel primal and terrifying. The storytelling also wanders and lurches between dreamlike symbolism and clunky action beats, so character motivations and pacing can feel oddly forced rather than inevitable. Still, the snowbound locations and grimy saloons have real atmosphere, and Bronson and Will Sampson give it a stern, earnest seriousness—just don’t go in expecting a convincing creature feature or a tightly built Western adventure.
