Slap Shot (1977)
To build up attendance at their games, the management of a struggling minor-league hockey team signs up the Hanson Brothers, three hard-charging players whose job is to demolish the opposition.
What people think about Slap Shot
Slap Shot is that rare sports movie that feels like it was carved straight out of a real, bruised working town—then set on fire with wicked humor and a rebel’s grin. George Roy Hill stages the rink as a loud, messy theater of survival, and Paul Newman, all charm and weary cunning, turns Reggie Dunlop into the kind of antihero you can’t stop watching even when you’re shaking your head at him. The movie’s energy is infectious, its dialogue has the snap of a great locker-room tall tale, and beneath the laughs there’s an unmistakable melancholy about communities and dreams on the verge of shutting down. It’s also proudly raunchy and brutally violent, so it won’t be for everyone—but if you can handle the rough edges, you’ll get one of the funniest, most quotable, and oddly heartfelt hockey comedies ever made.
Slap Shot is trying to be a grimy, working-class sports comedy about a dying town and a team that discovers violence sells tickets, and it commits to that idea with zero apologies. The problem is that the humor is loud, vulgar, and deliberately exaggerated, so if you’re hoping for an uplifting underdog story or anything remotely family-friendly, you’ll likely find it mean-spirited and exhausting. There’s frequent profanity, raunchy sexual humor and nudity, heavy drinking, and plenty of bloody brawling on and off the ice, all played for laughs rather than moral lessons. If you can handle the rough edges, Paul Newman’s charisma and the film’s scrappy energy can be a blast—but if you don’t enjoy “goon culture” as comedy, this isn’t going to convert you.
