Oh, God! (1977)
When God appears to an assistant grocery manager as a good natured old man, the Almighty selects him as his messenger for the modern world.
What people think about Oh, God!
Oh, God! is one of those rare comedies that aims for a smile instead of a sneer, using a high-concept premise to deliver something surprisingly warm, thoughtful, and downright charming. Carl Reiner keeps the tone breezy and good-natured, letting the satire land softly while George Burns, as a twinkling, plainspoken Almighty, gives the film an easy gravitas that makes you lean in rather than roll your eyes. John Denver plays the bewildered everyman with such sincere decency that the jokes feel human, not cruel, and the whole movie hums with the comforting idea that faith and common sense can share the same room. If you prefer your religion-themed stories edgy or your comedy sharper, it may feel too gentle—but if you’re on the fence, this is the kind of lighthearted crowd-pleaser that leaves you in a better mood than it found you.
Oh, God! is clearly aiming for a gentle, mainstream “what if faith showed up in everyday life?” comedy, and George Burns’ relaxed charm does a lot of the heavy lifting. The problem is the movie often settles for cute, low-stakes gags and feel-good platitudes instead of building sharper comedy or a story with real momentum, so it can feel uneven and a bit toothless. If you want bold satire, big laughs, or anything that seriously wrestles with religion, this will probably strike you as quaint and oddly meandering. But if you’re in the mood for a soft, old-fashioned crowd-pleaser with a warm tone and a likable cast, it’s an easy, pleasant sit.
