Julia (1977)

Julia is the rare prestige drama that feels genuinely alive: a story of friendship tested by history, told with the hush and pulse of a thriller. Fred Zinnemann stages 1930s Europe with elegant, tactile craft—costumes, cafés, train compartments, and shadows all doing quiet narrative work—while Jane Fonda gives Lillian Hellman a bracing intelligence and vulnerability that makes every choice feel costly. When Vanessa Redgrave appears, the film seems to brighten and harden at once, and their connection becomes the emotional engine that carries you through the tension without needing sensationalism. It’s measured and talky in places, and its political seriousness won’t be everyone’s preferred evening, but if you want a grown-up, beautifully made film that lingers like a memory you can’t quite shake, Julia delivers.

Julia is clearly aiming for prestige, old-Hollywood craftsmanship: a serious, adult story about friendship, moral courage, and the quiet terror of resisting fascism. The problem is that for a film built on an intense bond, it can feel oddly distant—Zinnemann’s polished, formal approach and the chosen point of view keep the relationship more talked about than truly lived, which drains the suspense and heartbreak of their punch. If you want a taut thriller or an emotionally raw romance, you may find it stately, even a bit lifeless despite the high stakes. Still, the performances (especially Redgrave) and the period detail are strong, so it’s best for viewers who enjoy restrained, literary dramas that value atmosphere and craft over visceral connection.
