Behind Convent Walls is Walerian Borowczyk in his most provocatively controlled mode: a period drama that looks like a forbidden painting come to life, where candlelit corridors and hushed rituals conceal a simmering human urgency. What makes it special isn’t just its notorious eroticism, but the way it uses sensuality and repression as dueling forces, turning the convent into a pressure cooker of faith, power, and private longing. Marina Pierro anchors the film with an unsettling, magnetic presence, while the direction keeps the mood poised between decadent beauty and creeping moral rot, building a scandalous atmosphere without needing cheap shocks. This isn’t for viewers who want subtle sexuality or a conventional “message” movie—its explicitness is the point—but if you’re open to transgressive European cinema that’s as artful as it is audacious, it’s a hard one to forget.

Behind Convent Walls is clearly trying to be a lush, transgressive period drama about repression, hypocrisy, and the rot beneath religious authority, and Borowczyk does bring a painterly eye to the convent’s atmosphere. The problem is that it often feels more interested in staging erotic scandal than building a coherent, emotionally involving story, so the plot can come off meandering and oddly detached when it should be gripping. If you’re not specifically in the mood for severe, explicit sex and nudity presented with a cool, observational distance, this will likely feel like a slog rather than a provocation.
