March or Die is clearly aiming for a gritty, melancholy Foreign Legion saga—part war drama, part desert adventure, with a moral sting about colonial arrogance and the cost of orders. The problem is it often plays like it’s marching in place: the pacing is sluggish, the tension takes a long time to arrive, and scenes that should feel like high-stakes adventure can come off oddly flat. Gene Hackman brings real weight to a broken, alcoholic commander, and the Moroccan setting plus the final battle deliver some payoff, but you’ll need patience to get there. If you want a punchy, rousing Legion thriller, this will likely frustrate you; if you’re okay with a somber, slow-burn mood piece with bursts of violence, it may still be worth a look.
