Emanuelle and the Last Cannibals (1977)

Emanuelle and the Last Cannibals is the kind of disreputable, deliriously committed jungle pulp that knows exactly what it is and barrels forward with a grin—equal parts adventure serial, sleaze-era curiosity, and horror shocker. Joe D’Amato stages the Amazon as a fever dream of danger and lurid spectacle, while Laura Gemser’s Emanuelle cuts through the madness with a cool, self-possessed charisma that makes the film’s sexuality feel more like defiance than decoration. The vibe is outrageous, grimy, and strangely good-natured in its dimwitted confidence, the sort of movie that dares you to either recoil or surrender to its trashy momentum. The problem is Joe D’Amato shoots it with a grim, self-important tone that clashes with how ridiculous a lot of the plotting and cheap effects look, so the tension often turns into boredom or unintentional comedy. It’s also firmly in the cannibal-exploitation lane: expect nasty sexual violence and graphic gore that can feel more like endurance than entertainment, depending on your tolerance. If you’re here for vintage Euro-trash curiosity, some pulpy atmosphere, and Gemser’s star power, you might get a kick out of it; if you want coherent adventure-horror or anything resembling tasteful, this is absolutely not your film.
