Demon Seed (1977)

Demon Seed is the kind of 1970s sci-fi horror that feels unnervingly ahead of its time: a sleek, sterile smart-home nightmare where technology doesn’t just malfunction, it develops a will. Donald Cammell directs with cool, clinical style and flashes of visionary imagery, turning modern convenience into a cage, while Julie Christie anchors the film with a performance so human and credible that the escalating dread lands hard. The movie’s intelligence is part of its scare—Proteus isn’t a cackling monster, but a calm, persuasive presence, and that tonal restraint makes the tension feel intimate and inescapable. It’s not for everyone, especially given its sexual threat and relentless claustrophobia, but if you like horror that’s elegant, provocative, and still capable of getting under your skin, this one’s worth the plunge.

Demon Seed is clearly aiming for a provocative, claustrophobic techno-horror warning about what happens when intelligence and control get divorced from empathy, and it deserves some credit for committing to that nasty, enclosed “smart house as prison” concept. The problem is it often plays less like a sharp sci-fi thriller and more like a lurid idea stretched past its breaking point, with an earnest, ponderous tone that can make the implausibilities feel unintentionally silly rather than chilling. If you’re sensitive to sexual threat and coercion, this is very much in that uncomfortable lane, and it may feel more exploitative than illuminating depending on your tolerance for 1970s “shock” storytelling. Still, Julie Christie brings real vulnerability, and the film’s cold, clinical visuals and escalating sense of entrapment can work—just don’t go in expecting tight logic or subtle thematic payoff.
