Black Sunday (1977)

Black Sunday is the kind of high-wire thriller they don’t make much anymore: big, nervy, and engineered with the cold precision of a ticking clock. John Frankenheimer builds suspense the honest way—through procedural detail, escalating dread, and a sense that every small discovery tightens the noose—until it all funnels into a spectacular set piece that’s as technically impressive as it is stomach-knotting. Robert Shaw brings stern, weary authority, while Bruce Dern gives a volatile, wounded performance that makes the danger feel uncomfortably human rather than abstract. It’s not for viewers who shy away from harsh violence or 1970s grit, but if you want a tense, expertly mounted action-thriller with real momentum, this one earns its reputation.

Black Sunday is clearly trying to be a ripped-from-the-headlines, procedural-style terror thriller, and John Frankenheimer stages the logistics and Super Bowl-scale threat with real, old-school seriousness. The problem is it can feel more like a well-researched plan being explained at you than a story you’re living with the characters—there’s a lot of talk, a lot of setup, and the pacing can get plodding before it finally ignites. Some of the tension in the finale also depends on effects work that shows its age, which may undercut the “this could really happen” vibe it’s aiming for. Still, Robert Shaw brings hard-edged authority, Bruce Dern is memorably volatile, and if you like methodical 1970s thrillers that prioritize mechanics over psychology, you’ll probably have a better time than viewers wanting lean momentum or deep character work.
