Aces High (1976)

Aces High is one of those war films that doesn’t just stage combat—it makes you feel the cost of it, pairing magnificently mounted WWI dogfights with a mournful, human ache that lingers long after the engines fade. Jack Gold captures the Royal Flying Corps as a place where courage and exhaustion share the same bunk, and Malcolm McDowell gives the squadron commander a haunted, electric edge while Christopher Plummer brings warmth and weary wisdom to every scene he’s in. The tone is somber rather than rousing, but that’s exactly why the action hits harder: the aerial sequences thrill, then immediately curdle into the uneasy knowledge of how quickly a “hero” can become a memory. If you want a clean, patriotic adventure this may feel too melancholy, but if you’re open to a war movie with bite, beauty, and an ending that lands like a quiet punch, it’s absolutely worth your time.

Aces High is clearly aiming for a grim, anti-glory WWI aviation drama, using a young pilot’s wide-eyed hero worship to show how quickly the war chews people up. When it works, the aerial photography and the melancholy mood do land, and the cast gives the material a bit of class even when the script leans familiar. But the film can feel choppy and unevenly performed, and the more obvious green-screen moments take the edge off what should be white-knuckle combat. If you’re expecting the polish and momentum of a modern war film, you’ll likely get impatient; if you can accept a rougher, 70s-style character piece with standout flying footage, it’s a decent, sobering watch.
