Yakuza Graveyard (1976)

Yakuza Graveyard is special because it doesn’t romanticize the underworld—it drags you into it, close enough to smell the sweat, the cigarette smoke, and the panic. Kinji Fukasaku’s camera moves with a chaotic, street-level urgency that feels less like polished choreography and more like history happening in real time, turning every confrontation into something bracingly alive. At the center is a morally ambiguous cop whose choices are as compelling as they are unsettling, and the film’s intelligence lies in how it makes corruption feel systemic rather than sensational. It’s a masterful, bruising crime drama, though if you’re looking for heroic catharsis or clean lines between good and bad, this one is going to challenge you.

Yakuza Graveyard is clearly aiming for a grimy, morally rotten cop-and-gangster tragedy, and when it locks in, it delivers that 1970s Japanese crime-film punch: sweaty streets, bad decisions, and consequences that don’t flinch. The problem is it can feel rough and chaotic in ways that aren’t always purposeful—plot threads get muddled, and the camerawork sometimes turns key action into a blur rather than a jolt. If you need clean storytelling, crisp fights, and modern pacing, this may test your patience, and some elements do show their age. But if you can tolerate messiness for raw atmosphere and a descent-into-corruption vibe, there’s still plenty here to justify the watch.
