Robin and Marian (1976)

Richard Lester trades swashbuckling sparkle for an elegiac, autumnal glow, framing Sherwood like a memory and letting the romance breathe in the quiet spaces between acts of violence. Sean Connery brings bruised nobility to Robin, Audrey Hepburn answers with a Marian of steel and tenderness, and their chemistry makes every glance feel like time itself is in the room with them. It’s not for viewers craving a jaunty, kid-friendly Robin Hood—this one is bittersweet and sometimes stark—but if you want an adventure romance with real grace, wisdom, and ache, it’s a deeply satisfying watch.

Robin and Marian is clearly trying to do something smarter than another swashbuckler: it’s a worn-out, end-of-the-road take on Robin Hood where romance and regret matter more than heroics. The problem is Richard Lester can’t quite pick a lane, so the film lurches between wry, almost jokey bits and grim tragedy in a way that can feel emotionally mismatched rather than layered. If you’re coming for rousing adventure, clean heroism, or a consistent tone, this will likely feel slow, oddly cynical, and occasionally awkward. Still, Connery and Hepburn bring real gravitas, and if you’re in the mood for a melancholy “what happens after the legend” story, it has a bruised sincerity that lands better than the script often does.
