Marathon Man is trying to be a paranoid, post-Watergate thriller where an ordinary guy gets yanked into a world of spies, Nazis, and moral rot, and it absolutely commits to that grimy 1970s dread. The problem is it takes its time getting the pieces on the board, and the plotting can feel needlessly murky—if you’re the type who wants clean logic and clear motivations, you may spend a lot of the runtime annoyed rather than thrilled.
