Lifeguard (1976)

Lifeguard is special because it finds real drama in the quiet places—between shifts, between seasons, between the person you were and the one you might still become. Sam Elliott gives a deeply satisfying, unshowy performance as a man who’s great at his job yet unsettled by what it means to keep doing it forever, and the film watches him with a humane, thoughtful eye rather than pushing him into easy melodrama. The vibe is sunlit and mellow on the surface, but gently aching underneath, like a late-summer afternoon that makes you take stock of your life. If you want big plot twists or broad laughs it may feel modest, but if you’re in the mood for a realistic, character-driven story that lingers like a half-remembered conversation, it’s a quietly rewarding watch.

Lifeguard is aiming for a low-key character study about a guy coasting on sun, sand, and a job that makes him feel young, then getting jolted into adulthood by an old flame and the question of what he’s actually doing with his life. The problem is it often plays like romantic twaddle: the dialogue can be pretty banal and the story stays shallow when you’re hoping it’ll dig into something sharper or more honest. It also feels dated in both its attitudes and its pacing, and if you go in expecting a breezy beach comedy (thanks, misguided marketing), you may find it oddly subdued. Still, if you’re in the mood for a mellow 1970s slice-of-life with a wistful tone and some decent atmosphere, it can be an easy, if slight, watch.
