Futureworld (1976)

Futureworld takes the killer theme-park idea of Westworld and sharpens it into a slick, paranoid sci-fi thriller where the real attraction isn’t the spectacle—it’s the creeping realization that the corporation running the show may be the most dangerous machine in the building. Richard T. Heffron keeps the pace brisk and the tone coolly unsettling, letting the glossy futurism and clever gadgetry seduce you even as the film quietly tightens the screws. Peter Fonda and Blythe Danner make for an appealingly grounded pair of reporters, bringing just enough human skepticism and urgency to keep the story from floating off into concept alone. It’s very much a 1970s vision of tomorrow—clean, corporate, a little cheesy at times—but if you like smart, pulpy sci-fi with a conspiratorial edge, this is an entertaining sequel that’s often an improvement in sheer momentum and mood.

Futureworld is clearly trying to cash in on Westworld’s paranoia with a slicker, bigger-scope conspiracy about corporate control and identity, and on paper that’s a great hook. The problem is it often feels like a guided tour of themed “worlds” padded with diversions, while the genuinely interesting cloning/robot ideas get raised and then skimmed over instead of explored. The suspense is mild, the plotting can feel ordinary, and the characters are more functional than compelling, so if you want sharp sci-fi writing or a thriller with real bite, you may find it frustratingly thin. Still, there’s a cool 70s futurism vibe, a few effectively eerie moments, and a premise that might satisfy you if you’re mainly here for retro sci-fi atmosphere rather than depth.
