What people think about Drum
Drum is the kind of rough-edged 1970s historical pulp that doesn’t pretend to be polite: it’s sweaty, angry, and strangely riveting, with a grindhouse energy that turns its bare-knuckle brutality and plantation intrigue into a volatile cocktail. Ken Norton brings a physical, wounded presence to the title role, while Warren Oates radiates oily menace and Pam Grier adds a jolt of star power that makes every scene feel charged, even when the film veers into lurid territory. The vibe is campy and sensational but also surprisingly tense, building to the sort of crowd-pleasing, fist-clenching payoffs exploitation cinema was built for. It’s absolutely not for everyone—there’s explicit sex, cruelty, and a lot of sleaze baked into the premise—but if you can meet it on its own disreputable terms, it’s an unabashedly entertaining, raw slice of drive-in provocation.
Drum is clearly aiming for a gritty, angry slave-era revenge drama, mixing brutal bare-knuckle action with lurid plantation melodrama to provoke and shock. The problem is it often feels more exploitative than illuminating, with a chaotic script that leans into sensational sex and violence and sketches many characters as broad, sometimes uncomfortable caricatures rather than people. If you’re looking for a thoughtful, historically grounded depiction of slavery or a nuanced thriller, this will likely feel clumsy and tone-deaf, especially given its R-rated sexual coercion and bondage themes. That said, there’s raw energy in the fight scenes and a few committed performances, but you’ll need a high tolerance for grindhouse-style excess to get through it.
