Carrie (1976)

Carrie is special because it doesn’t treat horror as a gimmick—it treats it as the awful, intimate pressure of being young, judged, and trapped, until terror feels like the only language left. Brian De Palma directs with a prowling, operatic confidence, turning hallways, locker rooms, and a gymnasium into stages for dread, while Sissy Spacek gives Carrie a heartbreaking fragility that makes every glance and flinch matter. Piper Laurie’s mother is a feverish nightmare of love twisted into control, and the film’s craft builds tension so patiently that when it finally snaps, it lands with the force of a modern myth. It’s intense and often brutal, so it’s not for the squeamish—but if you want horror that’s also a piercing human portrait, this is the kind you don’t just watch, you feel.

Carrie is trying to fuse a cruel high-school coming-of-age story with supernatural revenge horror, and when it works, it’s thanks to Sissy Spacek’s raw vulnerability and Piper Laurie’s terrifying, unhinged intensity. But be warned: De Palma’s “style” can feel like leering, especially in the early locker-room material, and if you’re sensitive to exploitative framing of teenage girls, this may simply not be your kind of classic. The finale is memorable, but it also shifts into chaotic, blunt-force mayhem that some viewers find more sloppy and crude than cathartic or clever. If you want psychological horror with restraint, look elsewhere; if you can handle ugliness in service of a big, operatic shock, this one still delivers.
