Cannonball (1976)
Coy "Cannonball" Buckman and his blazing red Pontiac enter the Trans-America Grand Prix, an underground road race spanning the continent in which there are no rules, no speed limits and no heed for the law. En route, Buckman jockeys with an international ensemble of racers for a $100,000 purse. But there are none more important than Cade Redman, his direct competition for a guaranteed spot on the elite Modern Motors racing team.
What people think about Cannonball
Cannonball is the kind of scruffy, gas-fumed ’70s joyride that doesn’t pretend to be prestige cinema—it just floors it and dares you to keep up. The movie’s special pleasure is its anything-goes vibe: a cross-country outlaw race where the jokes are broad, the characters are larger than life, and the real romance is between metal, asphalt, and momentum. It’s packed with energetic chases and gloriously excessive car carnage, buoyed by a cast that knows exactly what sort of cheeky, rubber-burning entertainment they’re making. If you’re allergic to cheese or want tight realism, look elsewhere—but if you miss the era when action-comedies could be this carefree and loud, Cannonball is an easy ticket to a good time.
Cannonball is clearly trying to be a rowdy, anything-goes coast-to-coast race movie where the cars are the stars and the plot is just an excuse to keep the pedal down. The problem is it often feels like a cheaper, rougher draft of better road-race romps, with thin character work, clunky storytelling, and a tone that swerves awkwardly between goofy comedy and harsher, meaner moments. If you need a coherent story, clever jokes, or production polish, this will likely feel brainless in the unflattering sense rather than the fun “turn-your-brain-off” way. But if you’re mainly here for scrappy 70s car chaos, a parade of oddball racers, and some energetic chase sequences, it can still deliver a bit of greasy, low-rent amusement.
