Burnt Offerings (1976)

Burnt Offerings is the kind of haunted-house movie that doesn’t just try to scare you—it quietly moves in, rearranges the furniture of your nerves, and lets dread accumulate like dust in the corners. Dan Curtis turns a rambling mansion into a living presence, and the film’s slow-burn rhythm becomes its secret weapon, giving every creak, glance, and oddly “helpful” coincidence time to feel inevitable. Karen Black and Oliver Reed bring a raw, believable strain to a marriage under pressure, while Burgess Meredith adds a peculiar, off-kilter warmth that makes the unease hit even harder when it shifts. If you need constant shocks, it may feel patient to a fault, but if you like your horror atmospheric, classy, and insinuating—more chill than shriek—this is a rediscovery worth making.

Burnt Offerings is clearly aiming for classy, slow-burn haunted-house dread—an ordinary family, an enormous old mansion, and the creeping sense that the building is feeding off them. When it works, it’s thanks to the committed performances (Karen Black in particular) and a few genuinely unsettling, old-fashioned images that stick in your head. But be warned: it leans hard on familiar genre beats, takes its sweet time getting anywhere, and the TV-movie look and straightforward visuals can make the scares feel softer than the premise promises. If you want sharp pacing, inventive shocks, or modern atmosphere, this will feel like a well-worn ghost story; if you’re patient and enjoy vintage, mood-first horror, you may still find it worth the stay.
