Black Magic 2 (1976)

Black Magic 2 is the kind of fearless, anything-goes Shaw Brothers horror that feels like it was dreamed up at 3 a.m. and filmed with absolute conviction—part medical mystery, part occult nightmare, and always escalating with a pulpy, propulsive confidence. Director Ho Meng-Hua keeps the pace mean and lively, pairing clinical hospital dread with sorcery-fueled set pieces, while Lo Lieh anchors the madness with a villain performance so committed it’s practically a spell in itself. The vibe is lurid, sleazy, and gleefully unhinged, with a punchy soundtrack and a steady stream of “did they really just do that?” imagery that cult fans live for. It’s definitely not for the squeamish or anyone allergic to exploitation-era nudity and extreme gross-out effects—but if you want vintage Hong Kong horror that goes all the way and never apologizes, this one’s a wickedly entertaining ride.

Black Magic 2 is clearly trying to outdo its predecessor by leaning hard into Shaw Brothers shock-horror: hospital paranoia, occult curses, and a villain whose youth regimen is as sleazy as it is absurd. The problem is the movie often mistakes escalation for storytelling, with a thin, stop-start plot and stiff performances that exist mainly to shuttle you to the next gross-out set piece. If you’re not specifically in the mood for dated effects, gratuitous nudity, and a parade of disturbing body-horror imagery (worms, spikes, “potions,” and other nasty business), this will feel less like horror and more like endurance. That said, fans of vintage Hong Kong exploitation may still get a perverse kick out of its unhinged imagination and occasional bursts of pulpy energy.
