In the Realm of the Senses (1976)
A passionate telling of the story of Sada Abe, a woman whose affair with her master led to an obsessive and ultimately destructive sexual relationship.
What people think about In the Realm of the Senses
In the Realm of the Senses is special because it refuses to treat desire as a tasteful metaphor; Ōshima puts obsession under a bright, unblinking light and finds something strangely hypnotic in its honesty. The film has the cool, composed look of art cinema—carefully framed, period Tokyo rendered with tactile elegance—yet the emotional temperature is feverish, intimate, and relentlessly escalating. Eiko Matsuda and Tatsuya Fuji give performances that feel less “acted” than surrendered to, pulling you into a romance that’s as seductive as it is unnerving. This is not remotely for the faint of heart—its explicit sex and violence are the point, not the garnish—but if you can meet it on its own uncompromising terms, it’s a provocative, stylish experience that lingers like a dangerous memory.
In the Realm of the Senses is trying to be a fearless, boundary-pushing study of obsession and power, using explicit sex as the language of the relationship rather than a garnish on top. The problem is that the film’s commitment to unsimulated, prolonged sexual content can feel less like insight and more like endurance—repetitive, claustrophobic, and, for many viewers, emotionally flat despite the escalating extremity. If you’re looking for a romance, a conventional drama arc, or even a “shocking but meaningful” provocation, this may register as disturbing pornography with art-house posture. The redeeming side is Ōshima’s controlled, deliberate direction and the leads’ total commitment, but none of that makes it an easy watch if explicit sex and bleak fixation aren’t what you came for.
