The Yakuza (1974)

The Yakuza is a rare gangster film that feels both worldly and intimate, where every act of violence seems to carry a history and a price tag. Sydney Pollack drops you into a Japan rendered with an engrossing sense of place—neon, tradition, and quiet codes of honor—then lets Robert Mitchum’s weary, watchful presence and Ken Takakura’s steel-spined restraint do the real storytelling. The action is stylish and meaningful, especially the sword work, not as flashy decoration but as the sharp edge of character and consequence. Fair warning: it’s bloody and unflinching, and the pace is more simmer than sprint, but if you want a crime thriller with atmosphere, grown-up emotion, and two great performances meeting like opposing blades, this one stays with you.

The Yakuza is clearly aiming for a classy, cross-cultural crime drama where loyalty, debt, and old wounds matter as much as the action, and you can feel the ambition in the setup and the mournful mood. The problem is it often plays like it’s explaining itself instead of gripping you—lots of exposition, a plot that keeps knotting up, and pacing that can feel oddly sleepy for a kidnapping-and-hitmen story. If you’re expecting a tight, propulsive thriller, this may frustrate you, but if you’re patient with slow-burn character tension and don’t mind occasional narrative murkiness, there’s real atmosphere and a strong, grounded presence from Mitchum and Takakura. Also be aware the violence gets blunt and bloody, including a memorable self-mutilation moment that isn’t for the squeamish.
