Shivers (1975)

Shivers is special because you can practically watch David Cronenberg invent his signature brand of body-horror in real time: a sleek, ordinary apartment building becomes a pressure cooker where civility peels away and something stranger, funnier, and far more unsettling takes over. It’s inventive in the way it turns science-fiction into a creeping contagion of desire and dread, building an atmosphere that feels both clinical and sweaty, like a nightmare filmed under fluorescent lights. The movie has that compulsive, can’t-look-away momentum—each hallway and elevator ride feels like a small gamble—while the performances keep it grounded enough to make the madness sting. Shivers is early Cronenberg trying to fuse body-horror disgust with a satirical jab at suburban “civilization,” using a parasite outbreak as an excuse to drag polite society into the gutter. If you’re expecting slick sci-fi or traditional scares, you may find it murky, cheap-looking, and oddly paced, with a grimy, dim visual style that can feel more exhausting than atmospheric.
