Rooster Cogburn (1975)

Rooster Cogburn is a late-classic Western that feels like a fireside yarn told with polish: rugged, funny, and unexpectedly warm, powered by the sheer pleasure of watching John Wayne and Katharine Hepburn circle each other with wit and steel. The movie’s special spark is their rapport—Wayne’s weathered marshal, half bravado and half regret, colliding with Hepburn’s flinty moral force in dialogue that snaps, teases, and occasionally surprises with its tenderness. Stuart Millar keeps the pace lively with old-fashioned adventure rhythms—river peril, outlaw pursuit, and frontier improvisation—while never losing the human stakes underneath the gun smoke. It’s not a revisionist, grim-dark Western, and it does brush up against harsh frontier realities, but if you want a crowd-pleasing ride with charismatic stars and a literate script, this one earns its spurs.

Rooster Cogburn is clearly trying to bottle the old-school charm of a star-driven Western adventure, pairing John Wayne’s grizzled lawman with Katharine Hepburn’s steel-spined do-gooder for a redemption-and-revenge ride. The problem is it often feels like a stitched-together “greatest hits” vehicle for familiar screen personas, with a contrived plot and stop-start pacing that can make the danger feel oddly mechanical rather than gripping. It also opens with grim subject matter that the film doesn’t always have the weight or nuance to fully earn, so if you’re expecting a tougher, more modern Western, this may come off as tone-deaf and dated. Still, if you mainly want to watch two legends spar and coast through a serviceable, old-fashioned chase with a few fun set pieces, it can deliver that much—just don’t expect True Grit lightning to strike twice.
