Posse (1975)
A tough marshal with political ambitions leads an elite posse to capture a notorious train robber and his gang.
What people think about Posse
Posse is a western with a sharp, modern bite: it takes the familiar manhunt and quietly poisons it with ambition, image-making, and the uneasy question of who the law is really serving. Kirk Douglas directs with tough-minded clarity, keeping the dust-and-sweat genre pleasures intact while letting Christopher Knopf’s script slide in a political edge that feels more like a critique than a gimmick. Douglas plays his marshal as a man who can sell righteousness to a crowd even as it curdles in private, and Bruce Dern is wonderfully volatile as the outlaw who knows exactly where to press. It’s not a dreamy, romantic frontier tale and it can be grim in its view of “justice,” but if you like westerns that have something pointed to say beneath the gunfire, this one sticks.
Posse wants to be a grown-up, politically minded Western, using Kirk Douglas’s ambitious marshal to poke at how “law and order” can be just another campaign slogan. The premise is strong and there are flashes of real bite—especially once the posse’s moral certainty starts cracking—but the film often feels more interested in making its point than making the drama land cleanly. Pacing and execution can come off a bit workmanlike, so if you’re expecting a tight, rousing cat-and-mouse Western, you may find it oddly flat. Still, Douglas and Bruce Dern bring enough edge to keep it watchable if you’re in the mood for a cynical, message-forward take rather than pure frontier entertainment.
