Jaws (1975)

Jaws is the rare film that turns a simple premise into pure, clockwork suspense—Steven Spielberg squeezes dread out of sunlit water and ordinary small-town life until you feel the ocean itself holding its breath. It’s thrilling without relying on excess, using patience, razor-sharp editing, and John Williams’ instantly recognizable score to make anticipation the real monster. Roy Scheider grounds the terror with human decency, while Robert Shaw and Richard Dreyfuss bring crackling personality and tension that make the hunt as gripping as the threat. If you’re allergic to slow-building tension or beach-ruining anxiety, it may not be your idea of fun—but if you want a masterclass in blockbuster storytelling, this is the one that still bites.

Jaws is aiming to be a lean, crowd-pleasing suspense ride—part small-town panic, part men-on-a-mission adventure—and it largely succeeds by squeezing tension out of what you don’t see. That said, if you’re allergic to “classic blockbuster” storytelling, you may find the build-up a bit talky and the suspense beats intentionally manipulative, like the film is yanking your nerves on purpose. The shark effects can also look noticeably artificial in places, which may pull you out if you need realism to stay invested, and the violence—while not constant—is sharp enough to be a dealbreaker for the squeamish. If you can roll with a slower first half and occasional 1970s rough edges, the character chemistry and relentless atmosphere are still the main reasons it works.
