Bite the Bullet (1975)

The problem is it often feels like a big, expensive exercise rather than a lived-in story: the characters are sketched in familiar Western shorthand, and the movie keeps you watching the event more than caring about the people riding through it. Its attempts at social commentary (sexism, machismo, competition) can come off conflicted, occasionally saying the right thing while still leaning on the very clichés it’s supposedly questioning. If you want a character-driven Western with real emotional bite, this may leave you cold, but if you’re happy with a long, tough-minded endurance spectacle anchored by Hackman and Coburn, it’s an agreeable time-passer.
