What people think about And Then There Were None
And Then There Were None (1974) turns Agatha Christie’s clockwork mystery into a sun-bleached nightmare, using the vast Iranian desert and the haunting ruins near Persepolis to make every footstep feel like it echoes into nowhere. Peter Collinson stages the suspense with sly, anxious camerawork—off-kilter framings and watchful angles that keep you scanning the edges of the frame, as if the film itself suspects someone. The cast, led by a rugged Oliver Reed and a coolly compelling Elke Sommer, brings a sharp, adult bite to the paranoia as manners crumble and accusations curdle into fear. If you want a cozy whodunit, this one’s too dry, cruel, and tense for comfort—but if you like your mysteries stylish, atmospheric, and steadily tightening the vise, it’s a wonderfully unnerving ride.
This 1974 take on Agatha Christie is clearly aiming for sun-baked, exotic suspense: ten strangers trapped in an isolated Iranian desert hotel while an unseen killer ticks them off one by one. The problem is it often feels more impressed with its scenery and concept than with tension, character interplay, or cleanly staged murders, so the mystery can land flat instead of gripping. If you want a faithful Christie puzzle with sharp pacing and a satisfying, uncompromised payoff, the altered setting and softened ending may feel like a cheat. Still, if you can treat it as a vintage, star-studded travelogue-thriller with a morbid nursery-rhyme hook and you’re patient with uneven energy, there’s some atmospheric curiosity value here.
