Act of Vengeance (1974) is a raw, grindhouse-era gut punch that turns trauma into a fiercely confrontational piece of crime-horror, less interested in tidy catharsis than in the messy, furious aftershocks of being disbelieved. Bob Kelljan’s film finds its sting in the way it stages a chorus of women pushing back against a system that shrugs, and the script lands with an unexpectedly resonant clarity—angry, pointed, and, in its own rough-hewn way, darkly entertaining. The problem is it often feels trapped in exploitation mechanics: the assaults are staged to shock, the editing is choppy and obvious, and the revenge “squad” material can come off rushed and oddly perfunctory instead of cathartic. If you’re looking for a thoughtful, empowering feminist thriller, the film’s clunky dialogue and contradictory presentation may leave you feeling like it talks a big game while undermining itself. That said, if you can tolerate very intense sexual-violence content and want a grimy, era-specific grindhouse curio with a nasty edge and a bleak mood, it may still scratch that 1970s revenge-cinema itch.
