Juggernaut (1974)
A terrorist demands a huge ransom in exchange for information on how to disarm the seven bombs he has planted aboard a trans-Atlantic cruise ship. Inspired by real events.
What people think about Juggernaut
Juggernaut is the kind of lean, intelligent ’70s thriller that wastes no time getting you into trouble and then keeps tightening the screws, not with spectacle but with craft. Richard Lester directs with a cool, controlled urgency, turning a vast ocean liner into a pressure cooker where every corridor feels like a countdown, and the suspense comes from procedure, nerves, and hard choices rather than melodrama. Richard Harris brings a bruised authority to the bomb-disposal hero, while Omar Sharif adds steady command, and together they make the danger feel bracingly real without the film ever shouting for attention. If you want a modern, effects-heavy disaster ride this isn’t it—but if you’re on the fence and crave fast, crackerjack entertainment with genuine tension and a minimalist bite, it’s a terrific watch.
Juggernaut wants to be a tense, procedural “race against the clock” thriller at sea, mixing bomb-disposal detail with corporate and police maneuvering, and on that basic mission it mostly succeeds. The problem is Richard Lester takes his sweet time getting there: the first stretch can feel like a lot of boardroom talk and scene-setting before the movie finally locks into the suspense you came for. When it does click, the defusal sequences are solidly nerve-racking and the cast (especially Richard Harris and Omar Sharif) sells the pressure, even if the overall structure feels a bit lopsided. If you need nonstop action or modern pacing, you’ll likely get antsy; if you enjoy slow-burn 70s thrillers with a strong back half, it’s worth boarding.
