Gold (1974)

Gold is the kind of 1970s thriller that earns its tension the hard way: with clanging machinery, cramped tunnels, and a steadily tightening sense that human greed can be as deadly as any cave-in. Director Peter R. Hunt stages the mining sequences with muscular, you-are-there craftsmanship, and the film’s suspense doesn’t come from gimmicks so much as the awful plausibility of a disaster engineered for profit. Roger Moore brings a grounded, capable charisma that plays beautifully against the story’s colder power players, while Susannah York and Ray Milland add a sharp edge of sophistication to the moral rot above ground. It’s not for viewers who want a light, quippy Moore vehicle or who are sensitive to peril-and-disaster intensity, but if you’re on the fence and crave a polished, high-stakes adventure with real bite, this one delivers.

Gold is clearly aiming for a slick, high-stakes disaster thriller: corporate greed, a ticking-clock sabotage plot, and a big “man vs. mine” finale built for tension and spectacle. Peter R. Hunt keeps the machinery moving and the underground sequences have a grim, claustrophobic punch, with Roger Moore doing capable “competent professional under pressure” work. The problem is it often feels engineered rather than lived-in—characters can come off like pieces on a board, and the romance/politics around the scheme doesn’t land with much emotional weight. If you want a thriller with real psychological bite or moral complexity, this may feel hollow; if you’re happy with a technically solid 70s adventure that prioritizes process and peril over depth, it’ll do the job.
