Busting (1974)
Defying orders to lay-off the case, two Los Angeles vice-squad cops go after a local mobster and use unorthodox methods to achieve results.
What people think about Busting
What makes Busting special is how it turns a familiar cop-movie setup into something sharper and more lived-in: a sun-bleached, street-level Los Angeles where the grime isn’t just on the pavement, it’s in the system. Peter Hyams stages the action with a cool, confident eye, letting tension build in the pauses, the dead ends, and the small humiliations as much as in the bursts of movement, while Elliott Gould and Robert Blake give the vice detectives a jittery, human edge that keeps the film from feeling like routine tough-guy posturing. It’s gritty without being self-important, intelligent without turning into a lecture, and it has a restless, cynical vibe that feels like the 1970s arguing with itself in real time. If you want clean heroics and neat closure, this isn’t that kind of ride—but if you’re on the fence about an older crime picture, Busting is the kind that grabs you by its texture and won’t let go.
Busting wants to be a grimy, street-level portrait of two vice cops raging against a rigged system, with Peter Hyams aiming for cynical realism rather than clean heroics. The problem is it often plays less like hard-hitting disillusionment and more like a messy, tonally confused sprawl, where the ugly bits (vulgarity, mean-spirited detours, and especially its treatment of gay characters) land with a thud instead of a point. Elliott Gould and Robert Blake have bite and chemistry, and there are flashes of raw 1970s L.A. atmosphere, but the story can feel clumsy and compromised, building heat without delivering much payoff. If you’re looking for a tight crime thriller or morally complex character work, this may irritate you; if you can tolerate rough edges and want a sour, abrasive cop movie that ends on frustration, it might scratch that itch.
