What people think about The Last Detail
The Last Detail is one of those rare movies that feels like you’re riding the train with the characters—laughing too loud, wincing at the hangovers, and slowly realizing the jokes are a kind of armor against something heartbreakingly unfair. Hal Ashby gives it that loose, lived-in 1970s realism, and Robert Towne’s script crackles with profane, funny, deeply human talk that Jack Nicholson, Otis Young, and Randy Quaid turn into something brash and tender at the same time. It’s a road movie without the shiny postcard gloss: messy nights, sudden warmth, and the ache of watching decency bump up against a system that doesn’t care. Fair warning, it’s salty and sometimes rough around the edges (including brief nudity), but if you like character-driven dramedies that earn their emotions instead of announcing them, this one stays with you.
The Last Detail wants to be a rough-edged, funny-sad road trip about two Navy lifers trying to give a scared kid one last taste of freedom before the system swallows him, and when it hits, it hits hard. But Hal Ashby’s loose, shaggy approach can feel uncertain: the pacing wanders, some scenes look flat or oddly staged, and the movie sometimes nudges you toward feeling something rather than earning it cleanly. If you’re not into 1970s hangout movies full of profanity, casual cruelty, and tonal zigzags between comedy and melancholy (plus a lingering nude-brothel moment), this will test your patience. Still, Nicholson’s bite and the film’s anger at petty injustice give it a raw honesty that might land if you like character-driven stories more than tidy plotting.
