Godzilla vs. Megalon is pure Saturday-afternoon kaiju joy: bright, breezy, and so unabashedly imaginative it feels like a kid’s monster doodles brought to life with real suits, real miniature cities, and real conviction. Jun Fukuda keeps the pace spry and the mood playful, tossing in an undersea civilization, a gleaming robot hero in Jet Jaguar, and a parade of colorful villains that turn Tokyo into a cheerful playground of destruction. The fights are big, loud, and often surprisingly funny, with a light environmental undercurrent humming beneath the mayhem without ever slowing the fun. If you want serious, grounded Godzilla this isn’t it—but if you’re in the mood for charmingly cheesy spectacle and crowd-pleasing monster action, it’s an easy recommendation.

Godzilla vs. Megalon is clearly trying to be a bright, kid-friendly monster mash with a new hero (Jet Jaguar), a simple “save Tokyo” plot, and nonstop suitmation action. The problem is that it’s so cheap-looking and aggressively goofy that any hope of tension or logic gets flattened fast—expect clunky effects, cartoonish human scenes, and a tone that veers into unintentional comedy. If you want the darker, more awe-inspiring Godzilla or even a halfway serious sci-fi adventure, this will likely feel like a noisy Saturday-morning sketch stretched to feature length. But if you’re in the mood for shamelessly silly kaiju brawls, a bizarre charm offensive, and “so-bad-it’s-good” energy, it delivers exactly that.
