Conquest of the Planet of the Apes (1972)

Conquest of the Planet of the Apes is the series at its most urgent and ferociously alive: a pulpy sci-fi action movie that also burns with the anger of a political parable, daring you to see its “future” as a distorted mirror of our own world. J. Lee Thompson keeps the pace tight and the atmosphere oppressive, building a police-state nightmare where every street corner feels watched and every act of cruelty has consequences. At the center is Roddy McDowall, giving Caesar a simmering intelligence and wounded dignity that makes the story feel personal even when it turns grand and explosive. It’s a harsher, more confrontational entry than some viewers expect—there’s real brutality here—but if you can handle its sting, you’ll find one of the franchise’s boldest, most relevant chapters.

Conquest of the Planet of the Apes is aiming for something bigger and angrier than the earlier films: a blunt, dystopian revolt story about oppression, radicalization, and what happens when mercy runs out. The problem is the execution often can’t match the ambition—cheap sets, stagey action, and heavy-handed direction make the “police state” feel more like a backlot lecture than a lived-in future, and the pacing leans on clunky exposition to get from point to point. It’s also a surprisingly harsh watch at times, with sustained scenes of abuse and torture that can feel grim rather than thrilling. Still, Roddy McDowall gives Caesar real intensity and the film’s central idea is potent, so if you can tolerate rough edges and want a darker, more political entry in the series, it may land; if you’re expecting slick sci-fi spectacle or tight storytelling, you’ll likely be disappointed.
