The Candidate (1972)
Bill McKay is a candidate for the U.S. Senate from California. He has no hope of winning, so he is willing to tweak the establishment.
What people think about The Candidate
The Candidate is special because it makes politics feel less like grand speeches and more like a slippery, day-by-day performance—funny in the moment, unsettling in the aftertaste. Michael Ritchie directs with a brisk, almost documentary snap that drops you into backrooms, rallies, and TV studios with such realism you can practically smell the sweat and cigarette smoke, while Robert Redford gives Bill McKay a charismatic shine that gradually reveals the cost of being “electable.” It’s a comedy-drama with a cold, clear eye: lively, urgent, and quietly furious about how easily ideals get repackaged into slogans. If you want a comforting civics lesson, this isn’t it—but if you want a sharp, still-relevant film that understands campaigning as a machine that eats everyone involved, it’s hard to beat.
The Candidate wants to skewer the political machine by following an idealistic outsider who thinks he can game the system because he has nothing to lose, and it’s often sharp in the way it shows image-making swallowing substance. The catch is that the satire can feel a bit smug and surface-level, like it’s pointing at the problem more than digging into it, and the script’s occasional crassness may read less “biting” and more “trying too hard.” Redford has the charisma to sell the campaign trail, but the character can come off as a cool, distant cipher, which makes the emotional arc feel thinner than the premise promises. If you want a deeply human political drama or a laugh-out-loud comedy, this may leave you cold, but if you’re up for a brisk, cynical snapshot of how candidates get packaged, it still has bite.
