Play Misty for Me is clearly aiming for a tight, nerve-jangling stalker thriller about obsession turning romantic fantasy into danger, and the premise still has bite. The problem is that the storytelling can feel oddly senseless at key moments, with character decisions that don’t always track and a protagonist who comes off frustratingly dense rather than compelling. Evelyn’s escalation can also play more like a mechanical switch the plot flips than a fully human unraveling, and Eastwood’s low-key, inexpressive style may read as cool minimalism or simply flatness depending on your patience. If you want airtight logic and richly motivated characters, this may irritate you, but if you can ride the vintage mood and enjoy a lean, pulpy cautionary tale, it has its moments.
