Duel (1971)

Spielberg, early and already razor-confident, wrings astonishing suspense from a simple setup, using clean visual storytelling and relentless pacing to make that rusty tanker seem less like a vehicle than an unstoppable force of nature. Dennis Weaver sells the mounting panic with a wonderfully human performance—smart, scared, stubborn—so the tension isn’t just mechanical, it’s personal. If you like action that’s lean, mean, and almost hypnotically focused, it’s a classic; if you need complex plotting or lots of character backstory, its stripped-down simplicity may feel severe, but that’s exactly what makes it so effective.

Duel is trying to be a stripped-down, nerve-jangling survival thriller where an ordinary guy faces an unknowable menace, and it mostly succeeds on pure tension and clever roadbound suspense. Spielberg’s direction is sharp and the chase set pieces still work, but don’t expect deep character work or big thematic answers—the film is intentionally minimal, sometimes leaning on internal monologue to fill the gaps.
