Soldier Blue is a Western that refuses to let the frontier stay comfortable, using the genre’s wide-open landscapes to stage a bracing moral confrontation between duty and conscience. Ralph Nelson frames the journey of a sheltered young cavalryman and a woman shaped by life among the Cheyenne as a tense, talky, often touching two-hander—part survival trek, part awakening—powered by Candice Bergen’s fierce clarity and Peter Strauss’s earnest vulnerability. The film’s vibe is gritty and accusatory, less interested in cowboy myth than in what that myth has historically erased, which is exactly why it still lands with such force.
