Little Big Man (1970)

The film’s secret weapon is Chief Dan George, whose warmth and wry wisdom give the story a moral center you don’t forget, even as the adventure careens from frontier absurdity to sobering history. If you want a straight-ahead heroic cavalry saga, this isn’t it—but if you’re open to a Western that laughs, aches, and argues with the legends, it’s a great ride.

Little Big Man is clearly aiming to be a sweeping, funny-then-devastating revisionist Western, using Jack Crabb’s absurdly long life to bounce between satire, adventure, and blunt historical tragedy. The problem is that those tonal gear-changes can feel jarring rather than purposeful, so you may find yourself laughing one minute and then wondering if the film has earned its sudden brutality the next. Its take on violence and revenge is intentionally uncomfortable, but it can also come off as messy or ethically muddled instead of sharp, especially if you want a consistent moral viewpoint. Still, Dustin Hoffman commits, Chief Dan George brings real warmth and humanity, and if you’re in the mood for a shaggy, provocative epic that doesn’t play nice, it has plenty to chew on—just don’t expect a smooth ride.
