Vengeance! (1970)

Vengeance! is special because it treats kung fu not as a parade of tricks, but as a hard-boiled moral reckoning—an early, influential jolt that helped define what screen revenge could feel like. Chang Cheh drenches the film in a noir-like gloom where loyalty, betrayal, and pride hang in the air like cigarette smoke, and every confrontation seems inevitable long before it arrives. When the action erupts, the choreography is sharp, purposeful, and bruising, elevated by the magnetic presence of Ti Lung and David Chiang. It’s not for viewers who want breezy heroics or light comedy, but if you’re in the mood for a darker, tougher martial-arts classic with real bite, this one still cuts deep.

Vengeance! is clearly aiming for a gritty, righteous revenge tale where martial arts justice takes on corrupt businessmen and betrayal, and on paper that’s a perfectly serviceable setup. The problem is the execution: the screenplay and direction feel slapdash, the acting often comes off stiff and phony, and the dialogue can make serious moments unintentionally funny. Even the fights, which should be the selling point, tend to look childish and more laughable than thrilling, so don’t go in expecting sharp choreography or convincing impact.
