They Shoot Horses, Don't They? (1969)
In the midst of the Great Depression, manipulative emcee Rocky enlists contestants for a dance marathon offering a $1,500 cash prize. Among them are a failed actress, a middle-aged sailor, a delusional blonde and a pregnant girl.
What people think about They Shoot Horses, Don't They?
They Shoot Horses, Don’t They? is one of those rare dramas that feels like entertainment and indictment at the same time: a sweaty, electrified descent into spectacle where the music never stops and neither does the desperation. Sydney Pollack shoots the dance marathon like a pressure cooker—fast, propulsive, almost cruelly alive—so you don’t just understand the contestants’ exhaustion, you start to feel it in your bones. Jane Fonda is ferocious and heartbreakingly funny as Gloria, with Michael Sarrazin and Susannah York giving her a human counterweight that keeps the film from turning into mere misery. It’s bleak, no question, and if you want comfort you should look elsewhere, but if you want a movie that grabs you by the collar and doesn’t let go, this one earns every shiver.
They Shoot Horses, Don’t They? is trying to be a brutal, unromantic snapshot of Depression-era desperation, using the dance marathon as a human circus where dignity gets traded for survival. It’s powerful, but it’s also relentlessly bleak, and if you need even a sliver of hope or warmth, this film will feel like two hours of being held underwater. Some performances are intentionally big and raw, which can read as electrifying or overblown depending on your tolerance, and the framing devices can feel a bit showy if you dislike “look at my symbolism” storytelling. If you’re up for a hard, cynical watch, Jane Fonda and Sydney Pollack deliver a punchy, memorable experience—but if you’re not, this one will just leave you drained.
