Taste the Blood of Dracula (1970)
Three elderly distinguished gentlemen are searching for some excitement in their boring borgoueis lives and gets in contact with one of count Dracula's servants. In a nightly ceremony they restore the count back to life. The three men killed Dracula's servant and as a revenge, the count makes sure that the gentlemen are killed one by one by their own sons.
What people think about Taste the Blood of Dracula
Taste the Blood of Dracula is where Hammer horror turns its candlelit elegance into something sharper and more venomous: a gothic morality play about respectable men chasing thrills and discovering, too late, what they’ve invited into their lives. Peter Sasdy directs with a confident, shadow-soaked style that makes every drawing room and ruined chapel feel like a trap slowly closing, and the production design drips with old-world dread. Christopher Lee doesn’t just “appear” as Dracula—he commands the screen with a cold, aristocratic fury that gives the film real weight beyond the fangs and blood. If you like your horror classy, atmospheric, and a little mean-spirited in its comeuppance, this is a vintage bite worth taking; if you’re after fast shocks or modern gore, it’s more slow-burn menace than splatter.
Taste the Blood of Dracula is clearly aiming for a nastier, more morally pointed Hammer entry, using bored upper-class vice and family corruption as the engine that brings Dracula back. The problem is it often feels like the plot is doing the work while Dracula himself waits on the sidelines, and the script can come off routine and oddly muddled despite the juicy setup. If you’re here for Christopher Lee to dominate the movie or for tight, escalating suspense, you may find it laboured and a bit thin. Still, the atmosphere, period grime, and a few genuinely grim set-pieces deliver the kind of gothic nastiness that will satisfy viewers who mainly want classic Hammer mood over sharp storytelling.
