The Stalking Moon (1968)
While moving a group of Apaches to a Native American reservation in Arizona, an American scout named Sam Varner is surprised to find a white woman, Sarah Carver, living with the tribe. When Sam learns that she was taken captive by an Indian named Salvaje ten years ago, he attempts to escort Sarah and her half-Native American son to his home in New Mexico. However, it soon becomes clear that Salvaje is hot on their trail.
What people think about The Stalking Moon
The Stalking Moon is a Western that trades swagger for a slow, tightening dread, turning wide-open landscapes into places where silence feels like a threat. Robert Mulligan directs with a craftsman’s patience, letting the desert light, the wind, and the long stretches of waiting do as much storytelling as the gunfire, while Gregory Peck brings a weary decency that makes every hard choice feel earned. Eva Marie Saint gives the film its bruised, humane center, and the suspense builds not through spectacle but through unnervingly effective moments that linger. It’s not for viewers craving constant action or clear-cut heroics, but if you want a thoughtful, beautifully made frontier thriller that feels tense in your bones, this one sneaks up and stays there.
The Stalking Moon is trying to be a restrained, adult Western about trauma, responsibility, and a quiet, relentless threat closing in, and Robert Mulligan gives it a dignified, somber tone. The problem is that “restrained” often slides into low-energy: the pacing is cautious, the tension comes in short bursts, and the central characters can feel more like symbols than people you’re desperate to follow. If you want a lively frontier adventure or a crackling cat-and-mouse thriller, this may leave you waiting for sparks that rarely arrive. Still, Gregory Peck and Eva Marie Saint bring steady credibility, and a few stark sequences and the bleak atmosphere may work if you’re in the mood for a thoughtful, muted Western rather than an exciting one.
