If…. is special because it turns the stiff rituals of an English boarding school into something volatile, funny, and faintly surreal—an allegory that feels both of its era and uncomfortably timeless. Lindsay Anderson films privilege and cruelty with a satirist’s venom, letting the absurdity of rules, uniforms, and “tradition” curdle into dark humor rather than polite drama. At the center, Malcolm McDowell’s Mick Travis burns with a charismatic, simmering defiance that makes the movie crackle even in quiet scenes, as if rebellion is simply another subject on the timetable. It’s not for everyone—its provocations, nudity, and sudden violence can be jarring—but if you’re in the mood for a bold, subversive classic that refuses to behave, it’s the kind of film that leaves you electrified and arguing with it on the walk home.
